What Is The Ultra Low Emission Zone? In London, the ultra low emission zone (ULEZ ) was launched on
8th April 2019 in central London. This now means if the vehicle you
are using is not compliant with the ultra low emission zone, you will be
charged £12.50 to enter the ULEZ. There are no exceptions for this as it
applies, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
For anyone using a non-exempt older vehicle in the low
emissions restriction, an additional £11.50 will have to be paid when you enter
the congestion charge. This has been introduced to encourage people to walk, cycle
or make use of public transport, helping to reduce exhaust gas emissions from
vehicles. Unlike the low emission zone covering all of Greater London, the ULEZ
only covers central London.
Are You Affected By The Ultra Low Emission Zone? To make sure the ultra low emission zone works effectively,
all vehicles that are not ULEZ complaint will be charged. The ULEZ covers
several London boroughs in full and the congestion charge will be applied
when you enter inner-city London. If you already live within the ULEZ, you can
register for a 100% discount. Unfortunately for people living here, this will
only be available until October 2021. The ULEZ covers:
Camden City of Westminster Hackney Hammersmith & Fulham Haringey Islington Kensington & Chelsea Tower Hamlets
These areas are covered in full and the ULEZ also covers
parts of:
Barnet Brent Ealing Enfield Greenwich Hounslow Lambeth Newham Redbridge Richmond Upon Thames Southwark Waltham Forest Wandsworth
The charge will apply to most vehicle types including cars,
motorcycles and vans. To meet the requirements of the ultra low emission zone. Your
vehicle must have minimum emission standards of Euro 4 for petrol and Euro 6
for Diesel. Petrol vehicles that are compliant have generally been first registered
after 2005 with the DVLA although some cars from 2001 onwards may be
acceptable. Diesel vehicles accepted are generally first registered with the
DVLA after September 2015.
Motorbikes and mopeds must meet Euro 3 standards, with
vehicles after 2007 being suitable. Buses, coaches and lorries will need to
meet the Euro VI standard or pay £100 a day to travel throughout the ultra low emission
zone and congestion charge zone.
Some vehicles that will be exempt from the ULEZ include:
Agricultural Vehicles Military Vehicles Non-Road Going Vehicles Which Are Allowed To Drive On
The Highway Types Of Mobile Cranes
Any vehicles registered with the DVLA as having historic
vehicle tax, meaning the vehicle is over 40 years old, will also be exempt. This
means classic cars registered with historic vehicle tax will not have to pay
the charge. Despite this, if the vehicle is used commercially, payment is required
for the ULEZ.

charge applies 24 hours a day for every day of the year, you must either pay
the charge or find transport that is compliant.
Ultra Low Emission Zone Charges & Fines For entering the ultra low emission zone in cars, motorcycles
and vans, you will be charged £12.50 per day. A further £11.50 will be charged
if you enter inner-city London for the congestion charge zone. If you are in a
heavier vehicle, which includes all lorries, buses and coaches, you will have
to pay £100 per day to travel in this zone.
These are the daily charges for the ULEZ, however, you can
also receive fines if you decide not to pay this fine. The fine for going
through the ULEZ without paying is £160 for each day you have failed to pay. Your
fine will be reduced to £80 if you pay within 14 days of receiving the notice.
For lorries, buses and coaches, the fine is more expensive once again, costing
£1,000.
If you are a first offender, you will receive a warning
letter initially, but penalties will be incurred after this with no second
chances. Using a vehicle that is compliant within the ULEZ is essential to
avoid payments and potential fines if you fail to pay.
